Netherby Meats: Closing the loop with local meat

01 May, 2025 | Card, Meet the Merchant | Return|

Mike Hanson is a third generation butcher. His father is a butcher and his father before that, and his 17 year old son is now getting into butchery too. When Mike took over Netherby Meats from his father, he added another revenue stream to the business and invested in a mobile abattoir. He takes this on farm for homegrown meat, which is taken back to the butchery, aged on the bone, processed as per the customer’s wishes and then taken back to the family on farm.

Mike is proud to employ up to 15 staff at Netherby Meats, both at the butchery and the mobile abattoir, which has become hugely popular to process homegrown meat, from Christchurch to Twizel.

Netherby Meats has been with Ruralco since the beginning. Mike enjoys the relationship, both as a business supporting rural communities and for their customers who get a discount when using their Ruralco card.

“A lot of my customers come back year after year. A local big dairy farm uses us twice a year to process their home kill beef. We turn up on farm and the animal is processed in a stress-free environment, and the meat then goes back on farm to feed the staff. It helps to close the loop.”

Mike is passionate about sourcing local meat to sell at his butchery, with most of the meat sold being sourced from mid Canterbury.
