Matt and Belinda Fine opened the Fine Lion in November 2020. Having owned and run bars and restaurants for years, this powerhouse couple are nothing new to the hospitality sector. They saw a gap in Ashburton for an up-market and fun bar restaurant experience, so started the Fine Lion ‘bringing a little of Christchurch to Ashburton’.
The Fine Lion is situated on the second story of the new Murney Building and has an impressive balcony area as well as the light, bright and stylish bar and restaurant. The food is exquisite, with the menu designed by local chef Chantelle Quinn and head Chef Kinnear Horsburgh.
“I love Ashburton, it’s all about the community here. We have a lot of good friends, it’s not too big, only one set of traffic lights and it take 2 minutes to get anywhere! Whether it’s to go and play squash, go mountain biking or go out for dinner, you don’t have to plan. It’s just easy,” says Matt.
Matt and Belinda have been with Ruralco since they opened their first pub in 2006 and absolutely love the relationship. The link it brings with the farmers and the local rural community is very important, as it adds another dynamic to their business. Most of the Ruralco cardholders that come into their restaurant are now counted as friends.
