90 Years Strong: Newlands Group
Now in its third generation, Newlands Group Limited was founded in 1933 by Bill Newlands. Initially established as an auto-electrical and battery service centre, the business diversified over the decades to include vehicle air conditioning systems. In the early 2000s, Robert Newlands, a grandson of the founder, expanded the sales side of the business. He joined the Powertool Centre Group and built a new showroom at the current site. The company continued its growth with the opening of the Rolleston branch in 2010 and the acquisition of Timaru Battery Service and Ace Automotive. Newlands Timaru was formally established in 2020 after relocating Timaru Battery Service to Washdyke.
Today, Newlands Group Ltd employs 65 people across its three branches. It offers a comprehensive auto electrical and air conditioning repair facility, Utilising the latest electronic scanning equipment for fault diagnosis and repairs. The company also operates a fleet of fully equipped service vehicles for on-farm repairs and maintains an extensive range of vehicle batteries, parts, and auto accessories. Their inventory includes power tools (Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee), Knipex hand tools, land and marine radios (Tait, Hytera, GME), EROADS GPS systems, car audio and reversing cameras, Hella LED lighting, and KT Solar and lithium batteries.
In September of last year, Newlands proudly became an authorised stockist and installer of ARB accessories. ARB, with origins dating back to 1975, is Australia’s largest manufacturer and distributor of 4x4 accessories. Known for its quality, reliability, and extensive product range—from bull bars and snorkels to rooftop tents and camping essentials—ARB is a perfect complement to Newlands’ offerings.
Newlands partnered with ATS (now Ruralco) in 1979 and remains in partnership today, 44 years later.
