This year, Tarbotton Land & Civil proudly celebrates 35 years in business, a milestone that honours a story of hard work, family, and a commitment to getting things Done Right.
Founded in 1990 by Stuart Tarbotton, the company began as a one-man operation offering farm maintenance and excavation services with his Atlas excavator and JCB backhoe. Travelling from farm to farm and knocking on doors, Stuart spent his early days cleaning irrigation and stock water drains, excavating deep clamshell holes, and maintaining farm laneways.
From those early beginnings in Tinwald, the business has steadily grown into one of the region’s most trusted and capable earthmoving and civil construction companies.
Today, Tarbotton Land & Civil operates across the residential, commercial, and agricultural sectors, providing a wide range of services including civil siteworks, earthmoving, quarry operations, and heavy transport, delivering high-quality projects throughout Canterbury. From shaping residential subdivisions and commercial developments to general farm maintenance and large-scale dairy conversions, the company continues to build on a legacy of reliability, precision, and pride.
Still family-owned and operated, the business now includes Stuart and Debbie Tarbotton alongside their sons Tim, Brad, and Ben, supported by a team of 45 skilled and loyal staff, many of whom have been part of the journey for decades. This close-knit team shares the same values that have guided the company from the start: integrity, quality, and a genuine care for people and place.
As Tarbotton Land & Civil looks to the future, it remains firmly grounded in its roots, a proud local company built on family values, community spirit, and a belief that every project, big or small, should be Done Right.
