Ruralco CEO recognised with Excellence in Business Leadership Award
Ruralco CEO Tony Aitken has been awarded Excellence in Business Leadership at the ANZ Business of the Year Awards held in Ashburton Friday night.
In addition, Ruralco was recognised as Highly Commended in Excellence in Retail & Hospitality, a great acknowledgement of the work happening across its retail operation, the dedication of its team, and the loyalty of the farming families Ruralco serves.
Since stepping into the role in 2023, Tony has led Ruralco through a significant reset, restoring profitability, reducing debt, strengthening operations and community connections, and reaffirming the co-operative’s local focus.
Under his leadership, Ruralco has returned to profit for FY25, rebuilt shareholder confidence, and sharpened its strategy around delivering real value for Mid Canterbury farmers.
Chair Sir David Carter says Tony’s leadership has been both disciplined and community focused.
“Tony has led with clarity, transparency and a genuine commitment to our Shareholders. He has restored confidence in the co-operative while ensuring Ruralco remains proudly farmer-owned and locally focused. We are very proud to have watched Tony’s progression into the respected CEO he is today, and the leadership he continues to bring to our co-operative.”
Tony says the award reflects the collective effort of the Ruralco team. “Strong leadership is never about one person. It’s about people working together toward a shared purpose. I’m proud of what our team has achieved for our Shareholders and our community.”
Ruralco remains committed to long-term sustainability, financial discipline, and strengthening its role in Mid Canterbury’s rural economy.
